Neutron Radiation Therapy
Fast Neutron (High-LET) radiation treatment is a very unique type of radiation that when compared to standard photon radiation (X-ray, Low-LET) shows some therapeutic advantages for treating ACC and other head and neck solid tumors. Neutron radiation is currently only available at two medical facilities in the US, The University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, WA and Fermilab in Batavia IL near Chicago. A third facility, the Gershenson Radiation Center at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit MI, is making plans to reopen at some point in the near future. Many ACC survivors have been referred to these facilities for treating ACC, especially for primary tumors in the head and neck region.
